Brian O'Leary Brings Financial Expertise and Lower Prises to Family-Run Butcher Shop
“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life worrying where the Japanese yen is” thought Brian O’Leary, waking up in the middle of one night in 2008. After 13 years in banking and investment funds, he was ready to trade his six-digit salary for a butcher apron.
The Dublin Meat Company had been a family-owned and operated business in Dublin for more than 40 years, successfully offering quality meat to local markets. Brian made the leap to join his father Paddy and his brother David at their shop in Artane.
One of the first steps that Brian took was to find a Business Mentor to help strategise on business growth. He began working with Tony Ritchie, Financial Mentor with Mentors.ie, and focused on what the market was demanding – quality products at lower costs.
With Tony’s mentoring on organization and strategic planning, the Dublin Meat Company quickly established themselves as a premium butcher offered wholesale prices in a retail environment and giving consumers the chance to buy 100% Irish Beef, Pork, Bacon and Lamb at up to 40% off of supermarket prices. The company expanded in 2008 with a new shop in Kinsealy, and again later that year with a new location in Swords, tripling their market share at a time when families were starting to experience the global cash crunch.
“Tony’s strategic planning was invaluable,” says Brian, “He helped us develop plans for expansion, and kept us on course to grow the business.”
Today the Dublin Meat Company is doing a booming businesses, despite the tough economy and the family is considering expanding again.
“Business mentoring isn’t a luxury in small business; it’s a necessity,” comments Brian, ”Family businesses especially need a strong mentor to provide an objective opinion.”
